Weekend Warrior: The Importance of Fall Lawn Aeration

Most people feel Spring is the most important time for lawns, but really Fall is just as important. Fall lawn maintenance gets your yard ready for the long winter and can help keep your lawn healthy all year long…. And aerating is one of the most important tasks of all.

Why is aerating so important? It is the process of puncturing the soil and pulling “plugs” below to create open pockets. It is through these pockets that air, water, and nutrients find their way to feed the roots of grass. Aerating lawns also encourages root development before the coming winter as well as loosen compacted soil to help your grass grow.

Fall is the perfect time to aerate your lawn, since we have the cooler air temperatures but warm ground temperatures. This allows your soil time to recover before going dormant for the winter.

Since you only need to Aerate your lawn only two times a year (early spring and fall), purchasing an aerator can be expensive, as well as, take up space in your garage or shed. Renting an aerator is the best solution to help save you money. And why not team up with a neighbor or two and rent for the day!

Tip: After the aerating process, it is best to keep heavy foot traffic off your lawn in order to allow the plugs to breakdown naturally. You don’t want all your hard work to get compressed back into the lawn with heavy foot traffic.

After aerating your lawn, now is the perfect time to rent a spreader to fertilize and overseed your yard. This helps the seeds to come in close contact with the soil. Don’t forget to add water!

Weekend Warrior: Pressure Washing to Get Ready for Winter

As we begin to say goodbye to the hot Summer sun, Fall is a time to prepare for the cold months ahead. No, winter in Texas doesn’t typically come with lots of snow, but we still must prepare for what is to come.  September and October are the ideal months to winterize and protect your home and belongings.

Rental Stop has many options of Pressure Washers to choose from such as Pressure Washer 4000, a Hot Water Pressure Washer, and our NEW Pressure Washer Trailer that comes with a Water Tank included.  No water where you need to clean…  No problem.  This new Trailer has everything you need included.

Below are some tips on what you can do to winterize your home and items with a pressure washer.  Remember when using a pressure washer, always take the proper safety precautions before beginning any project.

Clean out your Gutters

Gutters are an important part of your home’s structural integrity. Gutters redirect water away from your roof and walls. However, they can easily get clogged with leaves, insects, sticks, and other debris.  Make sure you clean them regularly so they can do their job properly.

Decks and More

Remember when your fence or your deck was new? The wood looked so fresh and beautiful. Using a pressure washer, you can restore your fence, gate, outdoor furniture, or deck to their former glory.

Clean Your Home Exterior

While the weather is still nice, check the exterior to see if there are any areas that have dirt, moss, or mold. Now is the perfect time to tame those spots. Pressure washing your home will easily remove stains and plant growth, from brick or vinyl siding.

Cleaning and Sealing Driveways

Before Winter hits, clean your driveway with a pressure washer. If needed and the surface is dry, roll or spray on the appropriate sealant.

Before Painting your Homes Exterior

Check for peeling paint on exterior surfaces. Pressure washers are a great way to blast away old paint.  Fall is a wonderful time to paint the exterior of your home, but you need to make sure that it is clean first.

Automobiles, Boats and RVs

After traveling and playing all summer long, it time to clean all those toys and cars.  Most people know you can pressure wash your car or motorcycle, but you can also clean your RV, boat, jet ski, and other vehicles.  Just be careful because of potential paint damage, be sure to use the gentlest cleansers and the proper nozzle.

Clean in and around your swimming pools

The inside and around your pool may also need a good scrub after a long summer.  Sometimes the brushes can’t do all the work and you need to pressure wash to get all the algae and grime off.  Drain your pool and pressure wash from the top down to make sure you get all the grime off.  Don’t need to clean your pool, then clean off the pool deck to make it shine like new.

Garbage Cans

The inside of your trash cans is not something you think to clean, but over time they begin to stink and have lots of dirt and grime inside.  Pressure wash away all the dirt and debris quickly and easily with a pressure washer. Simply lay your cans on their side and place them up against a wall or fence, so they don’t blow away with the force of the spray.

Clean your summer tools

If you do your own yard work, it is time to preserve your tools. We recommend pressure washing them before storing them for the winter. Line them up and spray them down!  Make sure you dry each piece, so they do not rust before storing for the winter.

Equipment Corner : 2HP and 8HP Tillers

Choosing the right kind of tiller to use in your garden is an important decision. You need to consider the size of your garden and the type of gardening you do. Rental Stop has a variety of different tillers to choose from to help prepare your soil.

Front Tine Tillers and how they work:
2HP Tiller, 35CC Kickstand Tiller, 5HP Tiller
Front tine tillers are smaller and lighter than rear tine tillers. The tines are in front of the engine and it is the tines cutting into the soil that drives the machine along. The wheels are not driven by the engine.
The tines on the front tine tiller rotate forwards and the user is ultimately in control of the tiller to turn over the soil. If the soil hasn’t been worked or broken up previously, it can require strength and effort. Once the soil has been broken up, the front tine tiller can till the soil easier and with less effort.

Rear Tine Tillers and how they work:
8 HP Tiller
Rear tine tillers are the machines used by professionals and/or serious gardeners. They are heavier and often have one or more forward gears, plus reverse. The rear tine tillers have wheels that are driven by the engine.
The tines on a rear tine tiller are lowered into the soil to the depth chosen by the user. New ground that has not been tilled before should be tilled once with the depth control set fairly shallow. For tilling new, unbroken ground, a large rear tine tiller is the better choice. Rear tine tillers are generally fairly heavy, and once the depth control is correctly set, the machine quickly settles down and can be run with one hand as the user walks alongside.

Fall Home Projects : Light Tree and Bush Trimming

Weekend Warriors : Although, most major tree pruning needs to be done in Winter or early Spring, Fall is the time to look over your trees, shrubs and vines to see what needs pruning before the winter.  Unless a plant is already dormant, the act of pruning signals the plant to grow, and you don’t want new growth in fall when the cold weather hits.  So, walk around your property and make a plan about each tree and shrub to see what needs to be done during the Fall or what can wait until the Winter and early Spring.

In Fall, you can remove:

  • Dead branches
  • Branches that have been damaged by storms or mishaps
  • Diseased growth
  • Or, any branch that could be a hazard during the Winter

Tips for Best results:

  • Work in small, manageable bites.  Remove longer branches in several sections.
  • Be sure any falling branches will not harm you or your home.
  • Do NOT prune more than 30% of a plant or tree during the Fall. This ensures the plant will have the resources to recover.
  • Do NOT forget to clean your blades.  It is easy to spread disease between plants with infected blades. It’s best to clean your tools, and specifically, the cutting blades, before use, before moving from one plant to another, and after use.
  • Do NOT remove suckers, water sprouts, overlapping and rogue branches.  This needs to be completed during the winter or early Spring while the tree is dormant.

Visit Rentalstops.com to rent any saw, trimmer or ladder for your Fall tree pruning job.  Some items available are:
