First, select a high quality nitrogen fertilizer. You don’t need a special fertilizer for the fall. In fact, if you fertilize regularly, your standard fertilizer will do the trick. Apply liberally to your lawn in late September through mid-November. Remember that the best fertilizers will contain a time release nitrogen formulation which ensures that your lawn will get the nitrogen it needs over time, rather than in one quick spurt. Time release formulas generally produce thick, green grass easily. After fertilizing, make sure that you give your lawn a heavy watering to help the fertilizer make it into the roots.
Taking the time to prepare your lawn for winter now will result in a greener more vibrant lawn next spring. If you want your lawn to be the envy of the neighborhood next year, take a little time now to fertilize your lawn before winter strikes.

Mowing: As temperatures cool, your lawn will start growing faster: You’ll likely need to mow regularly through the end of the season.
Aerating: Cooler autumn temperatures mean your grass will start growing more again — so it’s a great time to aerate to loosen compacted soil.
Attacking perennial weeds: Most perennial lawn weeds are most susceptible to spraying in fall when they’re winding down and getting ready for winter.

About 1 Week Before the Event

Complete your grocery shopping, decorate the house, run through a final checklist to ensure you’ve got everything you need, and prep whatever food or make-ahead dishes you can (trail mix, dry goods, etc.).
The Day Before
Your rental items will most likely arrive today, so you can set them up and test them out to ensure you’re ready for the party tomorrow. Finalize your decorations, and handle whatever food prep you can (marinating meat, preparing desserts, ice down the drinks, cleaning the house, setting up outdoor decorations, finalizing your costume, making sure the cameras are charged or have fresh batteries, etc.) One of the most important things you can do today to prepare for your party is to get a good night’s sleep. There will be lots to accomplish tomorrow, and if you are well-rested and well-organized, you’ll breeze right through it and be able to relax and enjoy yourself during the party – which is the way it should be!
The Day of your Event
The only tasks you should have left for today are the ones that cannot be handled any earlier (for example, mixing the punch, making finger sandwiches, last-minute touches, etc.) Today is about setup and final touches – putting out the food and drinks, lighting the candles, putting on the music, turning on the rental smoke machine and lights, etc.
